Summary on Grant Application Form
The use of particulate iron (filing) is known to be effective in the hydrodehalogenation (HDH) of chlorinated organics present in ground-water. In addition the use of surface deposits of Ni or Pd increases the activity of the iron and enables treatment of a wider range of contaminants. Although the chemical HDH approach has been employed to treat groundwaters contaminated with low levels of chlorinated organics it will be much less effective in the treatment of aqueous wastes containing high concentrations of these species. It is our belief that carrying out the HDH process electrochemically will offer a significant enhancement in the rate of HDH and offer considerable control of the HDH process. We have performed preliminary experiments demonstrating the effectiveness of the electrochemical process and propose to research in detail the performance of a prototype electrochemical reactor. based on high surface iron (modified with Ni or Pd) for the HDH of chlorinated organics. The performance of the reactor will be investigated using simulated organic contaminant streams and real effluents at a commercial site.
