Summary on Grant Application Form |
This research project addresses the potential for using shape memory alloy wires within composite material so that dynamic performance of the material can be adapted to suit the structural configurations of interest. The project is intended to bring together the expertise of four collaborators from academia and industry os that new advances can be rapidly achieved in the understanding of the dynamics of modern composite materials. The research is configured in such a way that fundamental materials science (Ostachowicz and McMillan), nonlinear dynamics (Wiercigroch, Cartmell and McMillan) and control (Cartmell and Wiercigroch) are addressed in an applied framework using both university and industrial resources. The project is intended to culminate in an applications demonstrator based on a Rolls-Royce engine in which intelligent composite components are to be used to control critical stiffness and damping characteristics. Generic project objectives are to obtain and disseminate research results in which SMAs, composite materials and intelligent control can be integrated to provide highly adaptable and configurable structural assemblies.
