Summary on Grant Application Form |
Ti02 an excellent model for the study of dielectric loss. The tan delta, the dielectric constant and the temperature coefficient of the resonant frequency (TCf) of single crystal and polycrystalline Ti02 will be examined as a function of temperature from 300K to 10K and as a function of doping. The dielectric constant and the TCf are fairly insensitive to microstructure. Oxygen deficiency in Ti02 ceramics causes a large increase in the tan delta. Recently we have found that very high Q can be maintained in such materials by careful choice of dopant. The charge and ionic radius of the dopant are central to the success. In addition we will explore the possibility of diphasic ceramics in which the sign of the temperature coefficient is different in the two phases. We wish to explore this in detail.
