Summary on Grant Application Form
Bus timetables at bus-stops, at unlit bus shelters, are often impossible to read at night. To install electric lighting there would however be very costly. In this project, a novel means of illumination is investigated. It works by collecting light from surrounding street lights, concentrating it, and delivering it to where it is needed; no electricity is required. This is done by means of polymer fibres, which contain a fluorescent dye. The project involves three main investigations. Firstly, finding the right dye and optimising its use for street-lit conditions. Secondly, determining how best to bring the light to the timetables. Thirdly, evaluating how much easier it becomes to read the timetable. For the last, trials will be undertaken with a range of users, including the visually impaired, under a range of ambient lighting conditions (particularly those for poorly-lit streets). Keywords describing areas of proposal.Energy, Materials, Transport
