Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research aims to develop a new framework for the study of localized uplift buckling of a pipe on an irregular foundation. This is an important issue in the offshore industry. The approach is, via the dynamical systems analogy, to use analytical and computational techniques associated with the study of nonlinear dynamical systems to detect spatial localization in this statics problem. The pipe is modelled as a strut supported by springs at a number of discrete points, so that great freedom is allowed in the specification of the support conditions. Interest will focus on the development of post-buckling paths allowing load response paths to be studied. The theoretical work will be backed up by small-scale laboratory experiments designed to highlight the phenomena involved.
