Summary on Grant Application Form
This network links natural and life scientists, engineers and clinicians with a common interest in exploring applications of nano- and micro-technologies in biology, biotechnology and medicine. Its members include 8 academic research groups from 5 UK and 2 Irish institutions, industrial representatives from 5 UK and 1 German company, the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Trust and representatives from RTC North, the Institute of Nanotechnology and Access Conferences International. The research objective of the network is to utilise the expertise of its members in micro- and nanofabrication, materials and surface science, biochemistry, behavioural science and medicine to develop e.g. single molecule sensitivity biosensors, nanoparticles for therapeutic applications, biocompatible surfaces for implants, artificial cochlea, pressure, position and rotation sensors for artificial limbs and multielectrode systems for investigations of brain function. The network will finance a number of specialist cross-disciplinary workshops with the purpose of formulation concrete research proposals in the above areas. The Network will also host a least one international conference for the research, industrial and investment capital communities, conduct a regular series of research seminars and vigorously promote postgraduate and postdoctoral training and technology transfer to industry.
