This proposal is a collaboration between UMIST and Edinburgh University Electrical Engineering Departments that intends to develop software models of rural and rural/urban distribution networks supplying the demands of time varying loads. Embedded Renewable and New Generators (ERGs) driven by stochastically varying energy sources will be connected to weak points in the network. The characteristics and capacities of the ERGs, distribution system and loads will be varied to quantify the interaction of the impact of the ERCs and the limits imposed by the rural distribution system on: maximum ERG capacity and production within existing system constraints. Local and regional voltage reprofiling will be investigated to optimise load flow and better integrate expanded ERC capacity. Algorithms will be developed to maximise dispatch of active power, ERC excitation control systems will be re-appraised to maximise production within time-varying voltage limits and Var generation. Static Var control will be considered as an active means of maximising production. Application of the body of knowledge, techniques and software developed will enhance the integration and economic viability of existing and prospective ERGs and expand ERG capacity.
