The proposed research will develop a new Eulerian-Lagrangian approach to turbulent dispersion using Large Eddy Simulation with a Kinematic Simulation subgrid model. Kinematic Simulations are Lagrangian models of turbulent dispersion that incorporate turbulent-like small scale flow structure. Of particular interest will be the statistics of relative particle dispersion and their relation to agglomeration and the effects of flow structure on dispersion and agglomeration. This new LES-KS approach will be applied to the modelling of dispersion in turbulent pipe flows and will be compared with laboratory and k-epsilon model results obtained at Imperial. The development of the new modelling approach will be underpinned by an investigation of the dependence of Lagrangian statistics on the geometry of trajectories as determined by the structure of the flow. This structure will be categorised in terms of elliptic/hyperbolic points and stable/unstable manifolds and will be analysed by means of wavelet transforms, fractal scaling and various eddy-eduction tools to determine which aspects of the flow geometry affect which Lagrangian properties of turbulent dispersion. This understanding of the relations between flow geometry and turbulence statistics will help reduce the Eulerian Lagrangian modelling to its essential components.
