Summary on Grant Application Form |
In a recent EPSRC Offshore Wind Energy Network Workshop it was noted that there is considerable uncertainty in the hydrodynamic loading on offshore wind turbine structures, in particular the shallow water effects and breaking wave conditions. The proposed research will investigate the wave/current loading on offshore wind energy installations in shallow waters. Model tests will be carried in a towing tank to measure the hydrodynamic loads on rigid and compliant cylinders in shallow water waves and currents. A LDA system will be used to investigate the kinematics of nonlinear shoaling waves under breaking and near-breaking conditions. The experimental work will be carried out in parallel to theoretical investigations carried out at the University of Newcastle and Imperial College. The research consortium aims at the development of a semi-empirical methodology for predicting loading and response of offshore wind turbine structures in shallow waters.
