SummaryThe stability of a Hartmann layer will be investigated experimentally, using mercury in a toroidal cavity. Contrary to pervious experiments, where an initially turbulent flow was stabilised by a magnetic field, our purpose is to create conditions where a laminar Hartmann layer undergoes transition to turbulence. The turbulent state will also be investigated experimentally, especially regarding the mean velocity profile and heat transfer characteristics. The laminar-turbulent transition results will be compared with the linear stability analysis and a nonlinear stability analysis will be developed to explain the turbulent-laminar transition. A recent model for the turbulent Hartmann layer will be further developed to take into account wall roughness and to model heat transfer. The results of this work will be relevant to the use of DC magnetic fields during continuous steel casting, where a turbulent Hartmann layer is created at the solid-liquid interface. This Hartmann layer affects the whole flow and governs the heat transfer to the mould.
