Summary on Grant Application Form |
The fabrication of a high efficiency thermoelectric energy converter presents a scientific challenge to materials science which, if successful, would make significant contributions to the development of future environmentally friendly energy sources and a reduction in the waste energy inventory. The improvement in thermoelectric efficiency over the past 30 years has been marginal due to limitations of traditional device technology. The proposed project employs a radically new approach in an attempt to improve the converter's thermoelectric efficiency by incorporating Fermi-gas/Fermi-liquid interfaces into a conventional thermoelectric converter. The research programme is divided into two phases. The objective of the first stage is to prepare and subsequently investigate the charge and thermal transport properties at Fermi-gas/Fermi-liquid interfaces. The second stage will focus on incorporating suitable Fermi-gas/Fermi-liquid interfaces into thermoelectric converters and subsequently evaluate their thermoelectric performances.
