Summary on Grant Application Form |
Whereas many current robotic systems aim for complete autonomy and thus exclude the human from their environment, it is accepted that in many future robotic systems intelligence will be provided collaboratively between human user and smart machine. To achieve this, much needs to be learned about sensing and understanding human intention, within the context of surrounding objects. This project aims to recover intention relating to simple manipulation tasks (i) by determining the human's focus of gaze and grasp attention by passive visual sensing; (ii) by determining the nature of the grasp closure; and (iii) by determining their relationship with nearby objects. The postulated focus of attention will be followed by an active camera platform, and the intention will be reacted to symbolically, and in later work by a robot arm. Active vision is often concerned with autonomous defining of a focus of attention: in this project however we are more concerned to elicit and copy the user's focus of attention and hence intention.
