The dramatic increase in the amount of data transmitted via optical communication networks has necessitated the introduction of new transmission formats in order to alleviate capacity problems. Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) strategies have proved to be favoured new strategy and utilise multiple optical carrier waves to increase the capacity of the system. This development has given new impetus to the drive to find all optical carrier waves to increase the capacity of the system. This development has given new impetus to the drive to find all-optical devices that can perform tasks, such as, switching, frequency translation and chromatic dispersion correction. A characteristic of optical propagation in optical fibre is that polarisation of the light at any particular point can not be guaranteed, and hence ideally any component in an optical fibre based communication network should be polarisation insensitive.This project aims to experimentally demonstrate schemes based on four-wave-mixing configurations, which can perform frequency translation and correct chromatic dispersion. The advantages of the schemes proposed in this project are that they are polarisation insensitive and are based on simple experimental configurations.
