Summary on Grant Application Form |
Gasification of biomass or co-gasification of coal and biomass are attractive in the current climate of higher efficiency-lower emissions because the biomass is CO2 neutral. Within the EU the requirement is a 10% use of renewables for electricity generation by 2010; biomass will form a major contribution to this. In view of this renewed emphasis on the use of biomass as a fuel, and in view of the tremendous diversity of biomass feedstock, a great need exists for a comprehensive classiciation system. The ultimate aim of such a system would be to allow the plant operator to predict the behaviour of a biomass feedstock through its classification, preferably based on a few simple tests. Two types of classification systems will be explored in this programme of work. One is based on the main biomass components (cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin), and the other based on the elemental analysis (H, C and O contents). In both cases, it is proposed that biomass feedstocks that fall within clusters on the classification diagrams will have similar properties irrespective of their category (waste, wood etc). The programme of work will establish, compare and assess the two classification systems for biomass feedstocks.
