The programme will investigate optically pumped nuclear spin polarisation and optically detected nuclear magnetic resonance (ODNMR) in III-V quantum wells and self-assembled quantum dots. Measurements will be made of nuclear Overhauser shifts in electron Larmor precession, nuclear spin diffusion and of composition and strain via intensities and quadrupole splittings in ODNMR lines. Measurements will be made on as-grown and also mesa-etcheded, 'single dot' samples. The use of applied electric field to manipulate electron charge distribution, so allowing study of the distribution of strain and composition via ODNMR, will be investigated. Most experiments will be carried out at Southampton exploiting polarised ultrafast reflection and cw photoluminescence techniques. Upconversion luminescence measurements will be carried out in Cambridge of electron and hole Larmor beating and associated Overhauser shifts in quantum dots. A variety of samples are already available; quantum wells from several sources; quantum dots, including pin structures, from Nottingham and Sheffield. Further custom-grown samples will be supplied from Sheffield and Nottingham.
