Summary on Grant Application Form |
The SITE (Semantic InTegration Environment) project investigates whether flexible information systems, driven by the dynamic needs of business, can be achieved using a component-based approach to development (CBD). The project's objectives are rooted in the architectural integration of the `semantics of business' and the ,semantics of technology' and may be broadly described as follows: the provision of flexible but structured means of representing the semantics of the business (understanding and expressing heterogeneous corporate processes, structures, mechanisms and the like); the provision of flexible means of embedding such representation in the semantics of the software domain; the provision of an enhanced level of automated support that bridges the semantic domains and improves process support for component development, integration and the capture of knowledge. In each of these areas, the aim is to refine and improve existing techniques and tools in the light of current shortcomings observed by industrial collaborators in practice and not to `reinvent the wheel'. This requires the integration of research spanning a number of disparate areas, including organisational design, change management, object-oriented techniques and tools, software reuse, domain engineering and software agents.
