Summary on Grant Application Form |
The ongoing convergence of computing and telecommunication technologies has opened up new opportunities for developing novel applications to support information access and communication. In particular, there is much scope for supporting people, both in their everyday life and at work, to interact with information and each other in innovative ways. To harness this potential requires understanding what people currently do and use in different contexts, and then applying this knowledge to the design, implementation and evaluation of supporting technologies. The goal of this proposal is to gain a better understanding of shared information spaces and to develop a generalisable model of shared information interactivity . The approach we will adopt is multidisciplinary, using a range of methods and development techniques, including ethnographic field studies, participative prototyping workshops, software development and cognitive evaluation methods. We will also build a functioning demonstrator and place it in a hotel, to enable us to evaluate it in situ and allow for iterative design. A main outcome of the project will be Human Factors principles and guidance on how to design, implement and evaluate integrated devices for use in public and private spaces.
