The refractory or recalcitrant fraction of NOM has been identified as the source of trihalomethane (THM) in treated water. Current water treatment processes rely mainly on the adsorption and coagulation properties of metal hydroxides, to effect removal of NOM. This long established technology, originally optimised for turbidity and colour removal, has been re-optimised over the past 20 years in order to maximise NOM removal. Despite this, it is unlikely that current best practice will meet emerging regulationsd and guidelines for 2004 and later.This feasibility study will use current literature and parallel studies at Cranfield and Leeds to identify the major components of the refractory NOM, rationalise why current processes do not effect removal and identify potential colloid and surface science routes for enhanced removal.The research programme will comprise three major routes of investigation: (a) identification of alternative adsorbents, selected to target the refractory NOM. Of particular interest here is in technology transfer of adsorbents from the beer and wine clarification area, where similar organics are present. (b) oxidation of the refractory NOM to render it more amenable to adsorption and (c) investigation of polymers, not simply as flocculation aids, but as complexing agents for refractory NOM.
