Summary on Grant Application Form |
Previous work, undertaken by the partners of this collaborative proposal, has demonstrated that the interaction between steep incident waves and surface-piercing columns, the diameter of which are outside the typical diffraction regime, can lead to the scattering of a high-frequency wave field. This is an unexpected result which has practical implications for both the specification of an effective air-gap and the estimation of likely impact loads on the underside of offshore structures. Although this effect has been responsible for significant structural damage, it cannot be predicted by the available models and a physical explanation for its occurrence remains unknown. The present proposal will address these points. By combining the research skills at Oxford and Imperial, new laboratory data and modelling techniques will be generated so that both the origins and the implications of this important effect can be rigorously assessed.EngProg\
