Summary on Grant Application Form
In reactive sintering a pellet mixture of elemental powders is heated to a temperature at which a reaction occurs converting the reactant powders into the product of interest. The heat of reaction raises the temperature of the product to temperatures close to, and sometimes exceeding, its melting point. This heat is lost quickly to the surroundings, hence there is a transient period where the material will be in a very soft solid, a semi-solid or a melt. The basic philosophy of the proposed research is to fully utilise the energy produced in reactive sintering of intermetallic compounds based on the Ni-Al and Ti-Al systems by processing in this transient high temperature window. The processing will involve either extrusion or compression into closed die, the latter being further classified into reactive forging or reactive squeeze casting depending on the physical state of the product. The development of these processing methods will require a detailed scientific understanding of the transient high temperature window and some modelling. These novel processing methods have the potential to produce pore-free intermetallic compounds in a rapid, economic and energy efficient manner.
