Summary on Grant Application Form |
The United Kingdom has a strong industry supplying marine control systems. Advanced controls are needed for vessels ranging from oilrig support to submarine systems. The aim of the Network would be to pull together some of the leading leading research groups in marine control systems so that advanced control and signal processing technology could be used to improve safety, and performance. The control engineering equipment and marine systems engineering services sector responds very quickly to the uptake of new control and estimation methods. In some industrial sectors it can take a decade for new control methods to find their way onto real systems but in numerous instances advanced controls have been applied on real ship systems within the period of EPSRC projects. Since the demise of the Marine Technology Directorate there has been less focus for researchers in the control and systems engineering sector, with the consequence that U.K. research activities in this area is not co-ordinated effectively. The proposed network would form a natural focus for this very well defined community and provide a forum in which to stimulate and co-ordinate fundamental and strategic scientific research in marine control systems.
