Over a century after their construction and length of dry-stone retaining wall still in service along Britain's highways has been conservatively estimated at between 5000 and 10000km. Whilst many continue to provide quite satisfactory service, their maintenance is a growing problem for highway authorities faced with a deteriorating and increasingly unstable stock of ageing walls. In particular bulging deformations and collapses are common. Similar problems have been reported in France, India and Hong Kong. Current assessment methods, based on simple rigid body stability checks are inadequate. Since October 1998 a three year EPSRC funded research programme, centred on field surveys of existing walls and development of distinct element methods for modelling wall stability has been ongoing under my direction at the University of Bath. My proposed visit to Ecole Nationale des Travaux Publics de lEtat (ENTPE) in Lyon, France, is intended to complement the current research program through general shared experience, field work study of French practises, and study of ENTPE laboratory testing. Importantly, the visit will provide a firm basis for the development of future funded collaborative research on dry-stone walls between the University of Bath and ENTPE.
