Summary on Grant Application Form |
The purpose of this research is to produce more realistic car-following models by determining which car-following models, and which parameter values within them, best describe the dynamical behaviour of real congested traffic. Until recently there was a distinct shortage of suitable experimental data to achieve this. We have recently produced appropriate data by using a helicopter to film groups of vehicles as they move along the carriageway. This film has proved to be suitable for extracting the desired data so that our car-following parameters could be estimated to an acceptable degree of accuracy. We have developed practical data extraction techniques and successfully estimated the car-following parameters for a few of the vehicles that were filmed. We now wish to continue with this research (we have already proved the viability of our method in our earlier project) so that we can buld on the success of this earlier work and maximise the use of the good quality aerial film that we have produced.
