Summary on Grant Application Form
This project aims to build on recent discoveries in our laboratories that showed that hypophosphorous acid and its salts can mediate radical cyclisation reactions in high yield and with none of the problems associated with the currently used toxic reagent tributyltin hydride. We aim to explore the scope of the reaction and the variation in reactivity across a range of radical precursors derived from low-valence phosphorus compounds. We further propose to apply the chemistry to the synthesis of compounds which are of medicinal importance, including the anti-Alzheimer drug galanthamine and the analgesic morphinans.
