Summary on Grant Application Form |
The investigation will encompass a joint theoretical/experimental study of spin-up/down in a rapidly-rotating, particle-laden fluid in a container having sloping rigid walls. Collaborations established with two companies in the offshore and automotive industries respectively have facilitated access to relevant technical data with which the model study results can be assessed and compared. The theoretical components (analytical and computational) of the study will focus on the non-linear dynamics of the response of the rotating fluid to large changes in rotation rate and will map the regions of parameter space for which steady state solutions exist. The full transient problem will then be studied and the various temporal behaviours of the problem will be identified and explored. Laboratory data will also be collected, in order(i) To determine the three-dimensional, time-dependent behaviour of the velocity, vorticity and particle number density fields throughout parameter space defined by the theory andTo compare with theoretical predictions and prototypes industrial data.
