Summary on Grant Application Form
Our intention is to develop a rate-based understanding of how granulation proceeds in high impact-energy environments eg high-shear and fluidised-bed granulators. We will conduct experiments aimed at characterising processes and products on the micro (single granule and smaller) scale as well as the meso (ensemble of granules) scale. On the meso scale we intned to use high-fidelity on-line and off-line particle sizing and our recently developed tracer technique combined with new computer modelling to identify and quantify the rates of nucleation, aggregation and breakage during granulation. We intend also to characterise the rates of collision by direct high-speed video observation of granule motion. On the micro scale we will characterise granules by measuring their solid, liquid and gas volume fractions, primary particle size(s), tracer composition, breakage and deformation characteristics. Our ultimate aim is to be able to show how the rates determined on the meso scale depend on the properties of the system on the micro scale.
