Summary on Grant Application Form |
Abnormalities in the way the heart repolarises have been shown to result in sudden death. Until recently, measurements of repolarisation were made from paper recordings of electrocardiograms. The Newcastle research group has studied the problems of automated measurement, compared different techniques, and demonstrated the clinical superiority of automated compared with manual measurement. Simultaneously, the Berlin magnetocardiography group have made great strides in recording the heart's activity magnetically, and hence with no contact with the human body. This proposed project brings together the expertise of both groups. Firstly, to identify the measurement problems, expert cardiologists from both centres will manually measure repolarisation in 25 patients. This will be followed by a quantitative evaluation of different aspects of measurement in at least 25 patients, and a final clinical comparison of magnetocardiography and electrocardiography in at least 50 patients. In addition, we will develop a practical technique for magnet ocardiogram analysis, and produce a proposal for a clinical prospective comparative study of the techniques for submission to a clinical research body.
