Summary on Grant Application Form
In the twelve years since the key NSF report established visualization as a means of understanding the 'firehoses of data' coming from computational simulations, commercial products have matured to the extent that systems can now offer a wealth of techniques on a wide variety of hardware platforms. Visualization of results is commonplace, with scientists able to 'fly' around their data, choosing alternative representations as easily as picking a book off the shelf. Some criticisms of these systems remain, though. Facilities for querying data values via the images are cumbersome and error bounds in data are commonly not shown visually. Moreover, the ability to change inputs to the computational process delivering the results is typically limited to altering dials and sliders, whereas a more natural way would be to use the graphical output directly. All of these deficiencies are indicative of a data description scheme and visualization architecture which is geared towards output generation. This project will attempt to close the interaction loop, first by understanding scientists' needs, and then by delivering a visualization-compatible, computation-oriented solution.
