Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research programme is a collaboration between the University of Leeds and three industrial partners: Permastore Ltd at Eye, Escol Products at Huntingdon and British Steel Strip Product at Port Talbot. The main aim of the project is to develop an improved scientific understanding of the vireous enamelling of hot-rolled steel sheets used for manufacturing large storage tanks. This aim will be achieved by accomplishing 6 objectives (a) to (f) described above. The programme will also define the scientific principles for identifying the new formulations of precoat and frit for vitreous enamelling of hot-rolled steel for reducing the surface defects. It is expected that these principles developed for the vitreous enamelling of hot-rolled steel will enable the use of non-specific grades of steels, which will replace the hot-rolled and the ultra low-carbon cold-rolled steels widely used in the enamelling industry for storage tank and white goods applications respectively. This will result in a major reduction in the process and materials costs for vitreous enamelling.
