Summary on Grant Application Form |
The nature of metal oxide environment interfaces are poorly defined and a fundamental understanding of these interfaces is lacking in the literature. The proposed research encompasses the following elements: 1) characterisation the oxide solution interface for a given alloy/solution system 2) determination of the critical factors affecting pit initiation 3) adsorption characteristics of a range of industrially relevant chemicals on to passive metal surfaces. We plan to use in-situ STM and AFM to obtain atomic resolution imaging of oxide-covered metal surfaces under specific environmental conditions. These techniques will provide structural characterisation of the surface under investigation. and the surface response to electrochemical changes. We will systematically investigate the factors controlling pit initiation and surface adsorption in typical engineering systems.Additionally, traditional d.c. electrochemical and ac impedance measurements will be performed to quantify the underlying electrochemical mechanisms and corrosion resistance.
