Summary on Grant Application Form
Perovskite-structured CaTiO3-based microwave (MW) dielectric ceramics will be fabricated using a conventional mixed-oxide route. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy will be used for routine characterisation of ceramics, paying particular attention to phase purity. Analytical and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy will then be used to further examine the microstructure and the crystal symmetry of the perovskites. Infrared and Raman spectra will be obtained from dense single-phase ceramics in reflection over a broad range and in transmission in the sub-milimetre (far infrared) regime. Sub-millimetre spectra in transmission will be used to evaluate the complex dielectric response which will be extrapolated to give intrinsic values of microwave loss. Reflectivity measurements will be used to obtain values of permittivity and an order of magnitude estimate of loss. The results will be compared to data obtained using the resonant cavity method in the TE01d mode. Impedance spectroscopy will be used to investigate conductivity as a function of temperature and PO2. The Raman and IR spectra and MW properties from samples sintered and annealed under varying PO2 will be compared to well processed ceramics where the losses are expected to be minimised.
