Summary on Grant Application Form |
Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is seen as a core tool in modern electrochemical science and technology; it allows a detailed examination of surface morphology while the electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) attachment allows rapid elemental analysis. The proposal identifies a need for an instrument which can be used interactively with electrochemical studies with electrode surfaces being observed before, during and/or after an electrochemical experiment. The environmental scanning electron microscope will be used throughout the programmes on fundamental and applied electrochemistry but the proposal stresses three projects where an upgraded and on-site SEM facility is seen as essential. These projects are (a) in situ experiments with solid electrolytes (b) the influence of ultrasound on electrode surfaces (c) microelectrodes and sensors.
