Summary on Grant Application Form
An experimental test iof a new theory of capillary waves of liquid-liquid interface supporting a dibrush polymer layer is proposed. The new theory suggests that the thickness of the polymer l;ayer should be accessible from the values of the interfacial visco-elastic moduli, i.e. the interfacial tension and bending modules of the film, additionally the theory proposes that the often used transverse shear of viscosity is non-existant.The theory provides a molecular insight into the dynamic behaviour of polymers at fluid interfaces which is inaccessible in the continuum theories used hitherto. Building on previous experience in surface quasi-elastic light scattering at the air-water interface, an experimental programme of interfacial quasi-elastic light scattering from liquid - liquid interfaces is proposed. Objectives are; test of the accuracy of the theory in situations approximating those used in the derivation of the theory; determine the existence (or not) of the transverse shear viscosity; obtain bending moduli for brush like layers at the interface; test the proposal that the layer asymmetry also contributes to the interfacial dynamics in addition to bulk phase property asymmetry.
