Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal will generate collaboration between two polymer scientists who have complementary expertise. Dr. Eastmond has developed synthetic methods for the generation of novel polyimides and has already demonstrated and the ability to control diffusion characterisatics by changes in their structure. Professsor Pethrick has developed the pisitron annihilation for the characterisation of free volume and recently built equipment for the study of gas diffusion. This project is a collaboration into the study of a range of novel and new polyimide materials and will establish new structure property correlations for these materials. Polyimides have considerable potential as gas seperation mambranes and also may be used in fuel cells and similar applications where knowledge of their diffusion characteristics is critical. This programme will significantly advance understanding in this area for polymer design.
