Summary on Grant Application Form
A novel nanoindenter will be constructed to fit into a high resolution transission electron microscope. The piezo-driven indentor will be fitted with a sensor to quantify the applied load. The profile of the sensor will be modelled by finite element simulations, optimised for a high dynamic range, and constructed by FIB micromachining. Defect initiation at surfaces will be investigated by in-situ nanoindentation of electron transparent mesas fabricated by micromachining. Real-time observations in real and reciprocal space will enable defect analysis at discrete intervals during the loading and unloading profile. High spatial resolution chemical analysis of the substrate and indentor tip will be performed before, during, and after, nanoindentation by on-line by EDX and energy filtered EELS down to the nanometre level. The unique correlation of structural, chemical and temporal information acquired during TEM nanoindentation will be used to quantify deformation in non-uniform microstructures at high resolution. Industrially relevant nanocomposites, ceramic and metal multilayers will be deformed as a function of grain and phase boundary location to quantify mechanisms of strengthening of devices by spatial confinement of defects and the roles of interfaces.
