The UK has a long history of mining. The re-development of derelict land in the built environment frequently encounters potential geohazards, such as old mineshafts and workings, which pose a serious risk to health and safety. Apart from the physical risk to new structures, (from subsidence), people are also at risk from mine contaminants (eg acid mine waters, heavy metals, coal residues, cyanides, sulphates and toxic gases). As trial pits and boreholes test only a statistically small volume of ground, there is a need for a non-invasive technique to provide ultra-high density volumetric images of the subsurface. The project aims to develop a towed-resistivity imaging system using non-contacting capacitive electrodes and an accurate (decimetre) real-time kinematic global positioning system, to accurately locate old mine-workings. Non-contacting capacitive electrodes should permit continuous data acquisition on artificial surfaces (eg tarmac, pavement) as well as natural ground. The unprecedented data-density and theoretical equivalence of electrostatic and DC resistivity at low induction numbers should allow the application of advanced tomographic image reconstruction schemes (eg Occam smoothness constrained inversion) to improve target recognition and location. The prototype system (hardware and software) will be calibrated at controlled test sites provided by our industrial patterns (SWK, CNT).
