Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of the proposed research prroject is to develop and charcaterise a range of novel layered materials based on a range of thermoplastic - matrix composites and an alluminium alloy. This project will build on the findings of a successful two year ROPA project in which a new glass fibre reinforced polypropylene system was developed and evaluated. In this study, a wider range of thermoplatic-matrix composites will be manufactured, tested under quasi-static and impact loading conditions and modelling using classical laminate theory (CLT). Initially, attention will focus on the optimisation of the composite - aluminium interface. Once this has been achieved, multi layer systems will be manufactured and their mechanical properties characterised experimentally and modelling using CLT. Finally, a series of low and high velocity impact tests will be undertaken in order to evaluate the dynamic properties of these lightweight materials.
