Congestion of the RF spectrum and the increasing demand for mobile communications services make use of the optical spectrum for in-building wireless communications increasingly attractive. Diffuse optical wireless networks illuminate the entire room to be covered, and multiple reflections from walls and ceiling cause multipath dispersion. This is must be countered using adaptive equalisation or advanced receiver structures when operating at channel data rates of >50Mb/s.Fundamental measurements of the multipath environment must be made, and generic models of these must be developed to allow receivers and equalisers to be designed. The programme is to develop a novel high-speed measurement system that will allow receivers and equalisers to be designed. Generic computer models will be developed using the Oxford supercomputing resource (OSCAR) and these will be verified using measurements of various propagation environments.
