The contribution of vehicle emissions to atmospheric pollution is well known. As a result ever-tightening performance requirements have been placed on vehicle manufacturers to produce cleaner engines. Innovations such as catalysts, lean-burn combustion design and direct injection systems have helped to produce more efficient however there may be practical limits to the improvements that can be made. Manufacturers are also considering how Low and Zero Emission Vehicles can be provided. This includes considering alternative vehicle powertrains. One of these philosophies is the use of a hybrid powertrain. AVERT will investigate the following issues relevent to this concept:A. Hybrid (internal combustion - electric) vehicles: The effectiveness of switching a hybrid vehicle powertrain from internal-combustion to electric mode.B. SI powertrains: The consequences of an external AVERT environment on possible control of engine management.C. External switching: how the control strategy for hybrid and spark-ignition powertrains can be developed.D. Traffic Effects: The simulation and practical results from the work described above will provide a direct input into an evaluation of the macroscopic impacts of the strategies.
