Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project will focus on the investigation of fundamental mechanisms of stress transmission in static and flowing particulate systems. The striking feature of such systems is the presence of strong fluctuations in stress and shear strain localisation. It is now emerging from photo-elastic visualisation experiments and simulations that the mechanism of stress propagation in random packings resembles neither a blurred version or an ordered system nor a random percolation. The picture is of stresses concentrated in restricted paths. Theoretical understanding of such heterogeneous distribution of stress will give deep insight into the physics of jamming and flow of pastes, powders and colloids. The raised issues are new scientific challenges. We speculate that the new fundamental knowledge will in time have impact on understanding materials of industrial importance.
