Summary on Grant Application Form
The field of supramolecular chemistry, which has evolved rapidly over the past few years, is essentially concerned with the study of intermolecular interactions, for example the binding interaction between a host receptor compound and its guest. In this project, supramolecular redox-active receptors containing a ferrocene unit will be synthesised and studied. These compounds are designed to complex biological compounds, in particular amino acids, through hydrogen bonding interactions. The presence of the ferrocene unit will enable complexation to be monitored and controlled by electrochemical methods, since initial studies have shown that complexation of related carboxylic acids induces a measurable change in the electrode potential of related receptors. Transport studies that model biological processes will be performed where amino acids are carried between two aqueous phases by achiral and chiral receptors. Of particular interest will be to establish whether substrate transport can be electrochemically controlled and whether chiral recognition/sensing via an electrochemical read-out is possible.
