Substantial resources have been expanded over the past few years in the UK on Direct Numberical Simulations for increasingly complex conditions. A key objective of these simulations is for resulting data to serve as a basis for developing improved RANS models. This is the rational of the present project. Thus, data generated for recirculating and 3D flows (associated with spanwise motion) are to be exploited for constructing improved non-linear eddy-viscosity models, especially for complex flows in aerospace. Special emphasis is to be placed on investigating transport equations for alternative length-scale parameters - an area of much uncertainty in current modelling theory and practice. Closure proposals will be used in RANS computations corresponding to the simulated flows, and the key fundamental elements of the models will be examined by reference to balances extracted from the DNS results. These comparisons will also be used for calibrating models (eg determinig numberical constants and cuntional relations). The models will then be applied to a sequence of increasingly complex flows involving separation and 3D features. This may then be followed by further model adjustment and calibration. The project will involve a collaboration between the Turbulence Mechanics Group at UMIST and the CFD group at QMW.
