Preliminary wind-tunnel tests in steady flow carried out at City University and supported by Westland Helicopter and DERA have indicated that a spanwise row of small jets, each inclined to the surface and skewed to the direction of the main flow, can increase maximum lift and reduce the profile drag of a KACA aerofoil. This proposal is the leading item of research in the recently awarded Rotorcraft Aeromechanics DARP in which we plan, with Glasgow University, to demonstrate the fundamental aspects of how smart continuous or pulsed air-jet vortex generators (AJVGs) installed in a next generation rotor blade section under quasi steady and unsteady flow conditions can potentially provide a step function impetus to the aerodynamic performance of the entire rotor blade. The wind tunnel experiments will be used to verify and validate computational Navier Stokes predictions of local (i.e., in the area surrounding the jet) and global (i.e., the rotor blade section with air jets) models. The models will then be used with sweep effect included to study how the AJVG concept may best be incorporated into the rotor blade for the specific applications of controlling stall and extending the useful design angle of attack range.
