Summary on Grant Application Form |
Four layer InSb/InAlSb heterostructures will be designed and then procured from DERA Malvern. They will be fabricated into a new type of non-equilibrium mode magnetic field sensor, with the potential for very sensitive, temperature independent operation. The devices are small, on the order of micrometer to tens of micrometers and will be fabricated by photolithographic techniques. They will be evaluated as a function of magnetic field and temperature (77K-470K) in existing magneto transport/cryogenic facilities. Noise measurements will be carried out with particular reference to flicker noise and its dependence on Hall probe misalignment.A theoretical study will determine the optimum materials parameters for the layer structure and the optimum configuration to limit the ratio of extraction current to transverse current. The characteristics of the devices will be assessed with particular reference to brushless DC motors for computer memory disk devices, position sensors in the automotive industry and for 3-axes sensors for navigation.
