Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research aims at investigating the flutter and noise generation mechanisms in turbomachinery fan assemblies. It is demonstrated that there is a great deal of synergy between the two phenomena and it is advocated that they should be studied together using the same numerical model. Such a model will include the intake duct, the fan assembly, the outlet guide vane (OGV) domain and a representation of the pylon geometry. The approach will allow the simultaneous study of upstream and downstream acoustics on fan flutter, and the study of noise generation mechanisms due to inlet distortion and fan/OGV interaction. An existing aeroelasticity tool, based on a non-linear unsteady viscous flow representation and a FE-based structural model, will be used in the investigation. Controlling parameters such as intake acoustics, fan/OGV acoustics, inlet and exit flow distortions, acoustic liners, structural and aerodynamic mistuning, pylon effects, leading-edge profiles will be studied. Meshes with up to 20,000,000 points will be used in the numerical simulations. Parametric studies will be defined by carefully examining the available experimental data. The work will be carried out by a postdoctoral research assistant who will make extensive use of EPSRC supercomputing facilities.
