Current methods for the prediction of non-linear transonic flutter characteristics are based on time marching solutions of the coupled aerodynamic and structural equations of motion. These methods are computationally intensive and require extensive parametric searches to define stability boundaries with respect to design and operating parameters.A three year research programme is proposed to develop a more direct approach for the assessment of non-linear transonic flutter characterictics, based on numerical path-following and model reduction procedures. These procedures are applied directly to the discretised form of the coupled aerodynamic and structural equations of motion. This generic approach will allow accurate evaluation of the stability boundaries and will enable the effects of freestream and structural parameters on the aeroelastic response to be assessed more rapidly and with greater transparency. The methodology, which exploits the sparse properties of the discretised aeroelastic operator, is computationally efficient, can be used routinely, and will lead to a significant reduction in the number of time-marching simulations required for flutter clearance.
