Summary on Grant Application Form
The flow patterns created during the filling of pressure castings are very hard to model, but also significantly affect the quality of the finished product. Traditional finite element based methods are unable to model such phenomena, either in 2-D or 3-D, given the complexity of the free surface and the associated amount of re-meshing required. This project aims to develop a particle based meshless method for the simulation of this complex filling process. The method will be based on previous research on corrected smooth particle hydrodynamics techniques. This technique follows the motion of the particles in a Lagrangian manner and can therefore naturally deal with very complex free surfaces, including trapped air pockets. An improved filling simulation will enable the production c_ lighter, stronger and more reliable castings. It will also improve the efficiency of the process with economic and enviromental benefits as a result of reduced energy consumption and use of materials. The research aims will be accomplished by one graduate research assistant working for three years and one post-doctoral research officer working for 2 years.
