Summary on Grant Application Form |
Expanding liquid surfaces occur widely in nature and in technological applications. The presence surfactants dramatically changes the behaviour of liquid surfaces under dynamic conditions. The Marangoni flows that arise from surface tension gradients can dominate the fluid dynamics of drops and thin films. This proposal will exploit recent developments in experimental techniques to study expanding liquid surfaces on the 0.1D1 second timescale. A liquid surface under continuous steady-state expansion will be established in an overflowing cylinder. The interfacial properties will be determined directly, quantitatively and non-invasively by ellipsometry, surface light scattering, neutron reflection and laser Doppler velocimetry. This approach will provide enormous benefits over previous research that has relied almost exclusively on the measurement of dynamic surface tension. A wide range of pure surfactants will be examined in order to determine the factors controlling the adsorption kinetics on the sub-second timescale and to develop a phenomenological understanding of Marangoni effects in surfactant solutions on this timescale.
