Within this programme of research the aim will be to demonstrate a new generation of portable femtosecond lasers which will be designed to be system integrable. In addition to the simplification of the resonator design a re-optimisation of the self-modelocking scheme will be undertaken for recently reported updated parameters for the Cr:LiSAF gain medium. This work will lay the foundation for a comprehensive investigation of the self-modelocking of Yb-based lasers (notably Yb:KGW and Yb:GdCOB) and Cr2+ZnSe which will enable a near/mid-infrared tuning bands to be assessed directly. The applicability of an ultraviolet-version of a very low phase-noise, femtosecond, battery-powered and portable Cr:LiSAF will be assessed in a collaborative study (with the University of Dundee) in respect of a photobiological study of the p53 protein which has been identified as a tumour-suppressor gene.
