The main objective of this proposal is to deliver high power, short (few nanoseconds) laser pulses through optical fibres, whilst maintaining reasonable beam quality (30-60 times the diffraction limit). This has significant potential benefit for a range of both optical measurement techniques and laser materials processing applications. In this project we will concentrate on the specific measurement technique of particle image velocimetry (PIV) to analyse gas flows, where flexible and rugged fibre beam delivery systems have the potential to simplify greatly the experimental setup and improve safety.The project will initially investigate the reasons why damage occurs in fused silica optical fibres at lower pulse energies than predicted from bulk samples of fused silica. An understanding of all the processes involved will then be used to maximise the practical damage threshold for coupling nanosecond pulses into optical fibres, using optimised fibre preparation technqiues and mode control. Using the knowledge gained, fibre beam delivery systems will be developed for PIV in collaboration with our industrial collaborators, the Rover Group Limited, specifically to measure gas f,ows inside internal combustion engines. These systems will then be applied to the measurement of suitable flows, using the PIV and engine testbed facilities available at Rover.
